Should we deploy AI today?
Is it time to deploy? When should my business start implementing AI? We hear these questions often.
It is a reasoned assertion to propose that the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass the developmental trajectory of the internet in its economic and societal impact.
AI's Evolution Surpassing the Internet's Impact
The transformative journey of AI is poised to outpace the profound economic and societal impacts once heralded by the internet. Initially a revolution in publishing, the web's evolution through Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 has reshaped content creation and introduced groundbreaking security technologies, including cryptocurrencies and NFTs. While the digital presence has become a norm, with businesses heavily adopting Web and Web 2.0 technologies, the industry's cautious stance towards Web 3.0 has been notable. However, unlike these technologies, AI is advancing at an unprecedented rate, with daily breakthroughs signaling a ripe opportunity for strategic engagement.
"You're early or you're late—there's no in-between."
Optimal Timing for AI Integration
This year, the big wait was to see what Google would unveil. With the recent introduction of advanced large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's GPT-4-turbo + vision and Google's Gemini - the race is on! These systems are maturing rapidly and are already being deployed across other industries. The open source community posts new & better models every day.
It's time to build.
Defining Intelligence Systems
AI, or Intelligence Systems as they are aptly named, is at the forefront of digital innovation. The Intelligence System stack has only two basic components - data + AI. The input is a prompt. The output is media.
These systems can be designed to aggregate user data from a multitude of sources, analyze and create correlations, and generate outputs.
Imagine a website like a highly personalized version of The Verge or the New York Times. These websites, with strict editorial guidelines carefully plan the order and sequence of their stories on their website and printing publications. In the 2010's we started to see the emergence of personalization. Now, instead of generic "tag suggestions", we can begin to do personalization on a natural language processing level combining it with behavioral information and historic data.
They are inherently scalable, growing alongside the company, and becoming an integral part of its operational fabric. Offshoots of the system can be used to standardize best practices, provide contextual information to those who need it, and correlate data in new and insightful ways.
The Risk of Hesitation
Delaying the deployment of an Intelligence System can yield significant strategic setbacks, allowing competitors to build a 'data moat' that can jeopardize market positioning. The competitive gains from AI compound exponentially if properly managed. If your competitor releases an AI product that your customers love, you'll have to fight hard to get them back as their product will be even more mature by the time you release yours.
Differentiation in the Age of AI
In a world where similar AI models become industry standards, the true differentiators will be the unique historical data, customer relationships, and the strategic AI market leverage each company possesses. We're approaching an interesting digital end-game. Dominant websites like Google, Facebook, and Amazon are unlikely to be overtaken by traditional competitors. However, if AI is able to intercept any of these core use cases (searching for information, checking in on your friends, or making a purchase + schedule a delivery), there's a major opportunity for disruption.
Next Steps
The establishment of a sophisticated Intelligence System is not just a technological upgrade—it's a strategic imperative. By adopting and integrating AI swiftly, we can tailor customer experiences, drive innovation, and secure a significant competitive edge, all while keeping your data private and secure. The sooner we embark on building this system, the quicker we can harness data insights to enhance our operational efficiency and profitability.
